Bold Action
and Change

We’ve Established A Blue Ribbon Commission on Racial Equity

Human Resources has the ability—and the responsibility—to solve significant
workplace equity issues. The reality is that without action and accountability diversity, equity and inclusion are mere words.

It is no longer sufficient for HR people to communicate solely with other HR people to solve the problems that impact work, workers and the workplace. We must challenge ourselves to do more. For this reason, we have formed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Racial Equity with the goal of driving actions and solutions that will positively alter the workplace experience for Black and other people of color.

This coalition of business executives and academics brings together leaders from both within and outside HR, since HR alone cannot provide the solutions to this issue. Rather, HR must listen to and work more closely with those committed to safe, civil and positive workplace culture.

Among those who are joining the Commission: SHRM Volunteer Leaders, CHROs and other C-Suite executives with accountability for HR, academics, researchers, and individuals who have consistently worked to identify long-term solutions to creating inclusive workplaces.

The Blue Ribbon Commission on Racial Equity will:

  • Assess the effectiveness of current programs and models including barriers to success.
  • Outline a step-by-step roadmap to create inclusive, diverse, and safe workplaces that apply accountability measures at all levels of the organization.
  • Produce and curate content and tools that will foster continued professional development in increasing equity in the workplace; share these resources with SHRM chapters and members.
  • Drive a longer-range agenda on organizational diversity and bias in the workplace.
  • Identify and scale programs that have been shown to successfully address pipeline, recruitment, and retention in diverse workplaces.

SHRM’S Blue Ribbon Commission on Racial Equality will meet periodically to discuss initiatives that can successfully support diverse recruitment practices, the retention of diverse workforces and other workplace DE&I matters. To suggest a topic of discussion, email [email protected].
